An original mixed media painting on glass in celebration of 'Pride'.  Complete with a black 'whistler' frame with silver slip.

“Gilbert’s Unconformity”.

The pride flag was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker and initially had 8 colours instead of the current six.

I have turned Gilbert Baker’s flag upside down for my own creation on glass to celebrate Pride Week on Arran and in the painting’s name I have included “a nod” to our Island’s own unique geology. I have always loved that word and it seems like the perfect time to borrow it.

I’ve never painted anything quite so loud and proud.

Each colour carries meaning as detailed below:

1. Red: Represents life. It signifies the passion, energy, and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community.

2. Orange: Represents healing. It symbolizes the community's commitment to healing, both physically and emotionally, from the challenges and discrimination faced.

3. Yellow: Represents sunlight. It represents the positive aspects of life, such as joy, happiness, and optimism.

4. Green: Represents nature. It symbolizes the natural world and encourages the community to protect and respect the environment.

5. Blue: Represents serenity. It signifies peace, harmony, and calmness, promoting a sense of acceptance and tranquillity within the LGBTQ+ community.

6. Violet: Represents spirit. It represents the diverse identities within the LGBTQ+ community and acknowledges the spirit of individuality and uniqueness.

These colours together create a powerful symbol of pride, unity, and diversity for the LGBTQ+ community.

Gilbert Baker’s original flag included the additional colours Pink and Turquoise (which I have used in my abstract painting ) and I particularly liked the Turquoise colour representing Art and the creativity of The LGBTQ+ community.
