Artist Statement
"It is what it says it is, inspired by the pompoms we used to make as children by winding wool around cardboard discs.

I had been working for a number of years on a series of sculptures inspired by bronze and Iron Age whorls; these are used for hand spinning and act as a sort of flywheel on a shaft that is dropped from the hand.

These whorls are characteristically a disc in stone like a lens with a hole in the middle.

I made many sculptures with this DNA. The pompom dovetailed neatly into the feel of this series and in planning a larger carving, I was further captivated and challenged by the lying of the wool strands on top of one another.

This bronze is a maquette for a much larger slate carving (600mm diameter) which is now in a private collection in Cambridge (pictured in the additional image). It also reflects another series of carvings I made of rolls of string whose geometries I found most exciting.
