Joan studied Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art from 1972 1976, under such prestigious tutors as Dr. David Donaldson, Leon Morrocco, John Cunningham, Duncan Shanks, and James Robertson, attaining Diploma of Art and Design in Drawing and Painting. She gained a further degree (Diploma of Education) at Jordanhill College of Education, and went on to teach Art in various secondary schools locally until the birth of her children, in 1980.
In 1985 Joan moved to Boston with her family, where she continued to study life drawing and painting at De Cordoba Art School in Boston, whilst continuing to paint and exhibit.
On her return to Scotland in 1988, Joan organised and ran adult painting classes for Glasgow University. In 1993, she opened a teaching studio at her home in Ayr from where she has been successfully running Robinwood Art School ever since. Many of her pupils now exhibit professionally.
Joan has had 4 articles published in 'The Artist' magazine and has organised 4 painting holidays in Italy and Spain with a further 2 planned this year in France.
Joan happily combines teaching and painting. She paints in a wide variety of mediums and styles with a particular interest in figurative work, portraiture and textural abstracts. A recently elected member of the GSWA, (Glasgow Society of Women Artists) Joan exhibits in galleries and exhibitions throughout Scotland, including the RGI.
