Artist Statement
"My Green Elemental Arran Abstracts are inspired by spring and early summer on the Isle of Arran. Every year when I return to Arran from my winter home in the southern Hemisphere, I am absolutely mesmerized by the arrival of spring on the Isle of Arran. It is easier to paint than to describe. Everywhere I turn the island is an abundance of green hues and tones in layer after layer as far as my eyes can see. I absolutely love my trips around the island to see the beauty unfold around every corner.
I also spend a lot of time out in the Arran countryside at this time of year photographing birds that like me return year after year. Willow Warblers, Chiffchaffs, Spotted Flycatchers, Wheatears and Whinchats are amongst my favourites. I find these birds along many of Arran's burns ... Machrie Water, Glen Rosa, Glenashdale Water ... and Benlister Burn that runs past my own house at Gortonallister. Photographing the birds amongst the soft greens on lichen-covered branches is exhilarating.
These green hues captivate my artist's eye as they develop and change throughout May and June before merging into more uniform greens in July. By painting my Green Elemental Arran Abstracts, I am trying to share not only what I see but also how I feel about Arran's stunning natural beauty as it develops and intensifies in May and June. Calmed, refreshed and energized, I feel a rush of artistic juices and I begin to paint with a passion."
