Ailsa Craig is an uninhabited island off the coast of Arran. It was formed from a volcanic plug of an extinct volcano. The island is locally known as 'Paddy's Milestone' as it sits midway between Scotland and Ireland.

It is a haven for large colonies of seabirds, including gannets, guillemots and puffins.

Ailsa Craig has vast quantities of fine granite that was mined and used to make curling stones from the early 1800s - 1971. Many of these curling stones from this granite are still used today.
