John Bellany

John Bellany was born into a family of fishermen and boat builders at Port Seton in 1942 and much of his work is said to draw inspiration from his coastal roots.

Many of Bellany's paintings depict the harbours with large fishing boats moored up or the trademark portraits of the fisherfolk, all with red noses and flushed cheeks from the harshness of the environment.

Bellany is recognised as one of the greatest Scottish Painters of the modern era. His works can be seen in some of the world's greatest collections including The National Galleries of Scotland, The Tate Gallery, The Museums of Modern Art and The Metropolitan in New York. He was awarded the CBE.passed away in August 2013 at the age of 71 years. A prolific artist to the end of his days, he died in his studio with a paintbrush in his hand.
