Bataban Ceramics

Working from a small studio in Whiting Bay,  Bataban is on a new ceramics journey. Inspired by the simple integrity and strength of nature and also the enormity of the Scottish landscape and coast. Working in stoneware Esther hand-builds and throws on the wheel.

Producing small batches of ceramics that are all unique, she throws each piece to its own form. Not always having a specific form in mind when throwing on the wheel, but enjoying the freedom and creativity this gives.

Bataban has produced three ranges, Storm, Wave and Marram for Arran Art Gallery and they all have their own individual voices. It is a three to four stage process to glaze the designs and they have to dry overnight between each stage so it takes time to glaze a whole kiln load. Depending on a variety of influences the glazes can change and react in different ways when they are fired.

Bataban translates to white boat in Gaelic and was the name of her Grandpa's boat. Esther is a Glasgow girl, living on the Isle of Arran with her family since 2006. His family were from Arran. With a background in media and the environmental movement, Esther is involved in the vibrant arts community on Arran.
