Biography
Nicky Gill lives on Arran in Whiting Bay. He studied art at Glasgow School of Art. Although he now specialises in painting, he has previously worked in woodcarving and jewellery. He paints landscapes, cityscapes, and figures.
Nicky has had solo shows at the Art Garden, Moniave and Gallery Cossachok, Glasgow as well as group showings at Green Harper Gallery, Burnside Gallery, Adshiel Gallery and Brodick Castle, Arran. He has participated in many other shows in numerous venues, including converted churches, garages, village halls, cafes, open-air markets and a caravan. Nicky has many pictures in collections in Arran, Glasgow and beyond. Nicky is currently working on paintings of the seashore and some of the villages on Arran.
Nicky likes strong colours as a source of light and brightness, though it is not his intention to completely abandon realism. Drawing direct from a landscape or model, he chooses from the abundance of shapes on offer; he attempts to find a pattern which might express the dynamics or mood of the subject. In his paintings, it is his intention to both strengthen the pattern and develop the subject simultaneously working towards a harmonious balance. Nicky cites Gauguin and Cezanne as two of his main influences.
