Sculpture in Slate
Terry is an artist-in-residence at Honister Slate Mine, near Keswick in Cumbria.
Born and brought up in Liverpool, Terry is a talented and creative self-taught craftsman, who has always loved and been inspired by the stunning landscape of the Lake District. In 2015, he gave up a successful career as a management consultant to concentrate on slate sculpture.
Key to Terry's successful transition to sculptor has been a close and rewarding working relationship with the Honister Slate Mine in Keswick. Terry now uses beautiful Honister Green Slate for all his sculptures and he has had the privilege of working alongside the team of incredibly skilled craftsmen employed at Honister. From them, he has learned traditional methods of working with slate and has used these very successfully, in combination with his own innovative techniques, to produce large scale sculptures. A number of these have been commissioned by the owners of Honister Slate Mine for the enjoyment of visitors and are set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Honister Pass, Fleetwith Pike and the Northern Fells.
Terry uses different techniques and stone carving tools, including hand polishing to give a beautiful smooth finish to varying degrees depending on the desired effect. Some of the pieces are a combination of polished and natural slate to highlight features of the animals or the landscape pieces. On some pieces, he applies a fine coat of oil to bring out the natural green highlights of the Honister slate.
Terry is a regular visitor to Arran and he has walked the coastal way, climbed the high peaks and immersed himself in the beauty of the Arran landscape. He knows the island well and has created some pieces especially for Arran Art Gallery, based on the local wildlife and farm animals together with some framed landscapes of the mountains and Holy Isle.
